Definition
In cleaning, cross-contamination is the transfer of soil, grease, or microorganisms from one surface, room, or zone to another via cloths, tools, hands, or equipment.
Why it matters
Using the same cloth or sponge in a bathroom and then on a kitchen counter can move contaminants into a food-preparation area. Simple systems—colour-coded microfiber cloths, cleaning from cleaner to dirtier areas, and dedicated tools for toilets—reduce this risk significantly without requiring advanced products.
